Richmond Local Information
Richmond is the principal settlement in the Borough of Richmond
Upon Thames in London.
In 950AD there existed a town by the name of Sceon (Sheen), although
it is not recorded in the Domesday Book. In 1368 Geoffrey Chaucer
served as a yeoman at Sheen, and in 1383, Richard II made Sheen
his home, and was the first King to do so. In 1497, a fire destroyed
the Sheen house of Henry VII, and when he rebuilt it in 1501, he
gave it the name of his favourite castle in Yorkshire, Richmond.
The east of Richmond is still known as Sheen.
Famous people to live in Sheen/Richmond include: Kings Henry VIII,
George V and Edward VIII, Queen Elizabeth I, George Eliot, Virginia
Woolf, Richard and David Attenborough, Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall,
Pete Townshend and Nancy Wake. Use your minibus hire to travel around
Richmond and view the beautiful Pembroke Lodge, where Bertrand Russell
used to live. Tour Syon House and Park, the 1500s home of the Duke
of Northumberland – in 1547, the body of Henry VIII stopped
here on his way to Windsor for burial – the coffin burst open
during the night and dogs were found licking the remains the next
day!
Take your minibus hire to Richmond Bridge, lying to the south west
of Richmond, and dating back to 1777. It is the oldest bridge over
the river Thames in Greater London. Richmond Lock and footbridge
dates back to 1894, and is the furthest downstream of all the London
locks.
Minibus hire is an excellent way to see the historic sites of Richmond.
