Orpington Local Information
Orpington is a suburb in the London Borough of Bromley with articles
found dating back to the Stone Age, early Bronze Age and Iron Age.
The area was also inhabited during Roman times and the parish church
predates the Domesday Book in 1086. Certainly in 1032, the first
recorded name of Orpington has been located when King Cnut’s
treasurer gave land to the Church of Christ monastery in Canterbury.
Until 1868, when the railway arrived in Orpington, it was mainly
rural and farmland. When the line was widened and the station built
in 1904, development boomed, but was bought to a halt upon the beginning
of WWII.
In the 1890s, William Cook bred the now world-famous breeds of
chicken: the Buff, Speckled and Black Orpingtons. The Black was
created by crossing three different breeds: Minorcas, Langshans
and Plymouth Rocks. The original three colours are still the most
popularly-bred of the Orpington breeds.
The Crofton Roman Villa is a Roman house thought to be from 140
to 400AD. The remains of 10 of the rooms in the house can still
be seen, as can evidence of both concreted and tiled floors, and
the under-floor heating. Something else not to be missed while touring
in your minibus hire is the Orpington Priory – the building
on the site dates back to 1290.
