North Cheam Local Information

North Cheam is the home to the Saint Anthony’s Hospital, which started its life as North Cheam House, and the Lord Nelson Inn, where horse drawn carriages stopped on the road from London to Epsom. After being bought by the Daughters of the Cross for £4625, they rebuilt the original house in 1914, and patients paid according to their means.

The first rebuild produced a hospital of 100 beds, making it one of the largest Catholic hospitals in the country at the time. In 1948, the National Health Service was established, and Saint Anthony’s began treating mainly NHS-funded patients. The NHS contract with Saint Anthony’s ended in the early 1970s, resulting in the need to build again in 1975. The new building was a first in its field, offering patients their own beds in a new patient-centred system. In 1987, Saint Raphael’s opened on the grounds and it provides free care for patients with terminal illnesses.
