Motspur Park Local Information
Motspur Park straddles two boroughs, Kingston-upon-Thames and Merton.
During the late 1530s and early 1540s land was taken back from
the churches and as part of this process, the abbey land in the
area of Motspur Park was given to the wealthy merchant family, the
Greshams, who sold it in either 1570 or 1612. The land remained
farming land and was presided over by a number of families the most
famous of which was the Raynes, who gave their name to Raynes Park.
In 1864 the then-landowners had a railway line put across their
properties.
Motspur Park was rural up until the end of the 1800s, when the
railway was constructed in 1859 and the station itself in the early
1900s. Take your minibus hire around Motspur Park and try to find
the playing fields made famous in movies such as ‘The Games’
and ‘Chariots of Fire’. Or go for a drive along England’s
first dual-carriageway, the Kingston Bypass (A3), built back in
1926 just to the north of Motspur Park. The New Malden Evangelical
Free Church had its beginnings in a little house in 1906.
