Morden is located in the London Borough of Merton. Although it is known that Celtic people lived near to Morden in prehistoric times, the first real activity in Morden came with the Roman road, Stane Street, which is now the A24. Drive along the A24 in your minibus hire, through Morden and picture what it would have been like so long ago when Romans lived in the area. Stane Street came from the south west to Stonecot Hill and crossed Morden Park to the west of where the present-day dual carriageway is. It then passed through the mini golf course the grounds of Saint Lawrence’s Church and down the hill to the town centre where it went to the west of the underground station and crossed the northern corner of Morden Hall Park heading to Colliers Wood and Tooting. Saint Lawrence Church stands in the centre of the old village and dates back to Saxon times as churches dedicated to Saint Lawrence were usually Saxon in origin. Further, the mound on which the church is located may have been a Saxon burial ground. The first church was probably wooden but the first stone and brick church was built after the Norman conquest.
