Mitcham is located in the London Borough of Merton, and the name is believed to mean ‘big settlement’ in Anglo-Saxon. Even before the Saxons and Romans lived in the area, it is thought that the Celts had a settlement there, with evidence of a fort located nearby.

Graves and a well from the Roman era lend support to them having spent time there, and the Saxons are evidenced with a graveyard unearthed there and many relics from the site now on display in the British Museum. The church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul dates back to Saxon times and although it was rebuilt in the 1800s it still incorporates the original Saxon tower in its structure.
