Kennington is located in the London Borough of Lambeth and in 1337 Edward III gave the manor to his son, Edward of Woodstock, Prince of Wales (more commonly known as the Black Prince, but only after his death). He was the father of Richard II. Edward never served as king – having died a year before his father, the throne never passed to him. Edward was the first to suffer this fate, and his surviving son took the crown.

Edward married his cousin, Joan (‘the fair maid of Kent’, with who he had been raised), in secret in 1361, and when it was discovered the marriage was annulled by the pope, before he gave approval for the two to be married again, legally and in public. This caused controversy as it was seen as a waste of an opportunity to form an alliance with a foreign power and the fact that Joan had what was viewed as a poor marriage history.

Prior to marrying Edward, Joan had secretly married a man by the name of Thomas Holland at the age of 12. Holland went to fight in the Crusades, and while overseas Jane’s family forced her to marry another man, William Montacute. Joan kept her first marriage secret for fear of Holland being put to death. When Holland did return, he appealed to the pope and king. When Montacute found out that Joan supported Holland, he kept her prisoner in his house. The pope finally annulled her marriage to Montacute, and she lived with him and bore four children before he died 11 years later. It was after this she married Edward.
