Heathrow Local Information
Type ‘Heathrow’ into any search engine and the first
few pages concentrate mostly on Heathrow Airport, and true enough,
it can be forgotten that there was an actual village called Heathrow.
So as you pick up your minibus hire from the airport, spare a thought
for the little village that was demolished to make way for one of
the world’s busiest airports!
Heathrow, the village, was located in the Borough of Hillingdon,
and its name was thought to be taken from Anglo-Saxon meaning ‘row
of houses on a heath’. Evidence has been unearthed over the
years to suggest that land just north-east of ‘Heathrow’
was inhabited as far back as 500BC, and much later it was believed
to be a Roman camp. Early in the 1400s, Heathrow began to ‘develop’,
and by 1582, Heathrow had 14 houses, but in the mid-1700s, not much
else is known about the little village.
In 1839 there was a public house, and 1930 saw the building of
the ‘Great Western Aerodrome’ by the Fairey Aviation
Co. In 1944 the airfield was given over to the Royal Air Force,
and as it became Heathrow R.A.F. station, Heathrow and its neighbouring
hamlet Perry Oaks were demolished. In 1946, Heathrow Airport was
born, and was transferred to the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
Heathrow the village was where terminal three now stands –
there are now four terminals, a cargo terminal and building has
commenced on terminal five with terminal six being planned. Terminal
six would see the possible demolition of communities in Hillingdon,
including a church dating back to 1067.
