Hampton Wick Local Information

Hampton Wick is situated in the Borough of Richmond-upon-Thames located directly on the riverside. Evidence has been found to suggest settlement by Romans (a large amount of pottery in Lower Teddington Road, in 1992), and the first bridge over the river (between Kingston and Hampton Wick) was built in 1219, replacing the Roman ford.

Timothy Bennet, a shoemaker from the late 1600s to early 1700s, found himself the hero of the common man when he campaigned to have nearby Bushy Park opened up to the public. Due to his successful arguments that the land was public land and the closure of it caused inconvenience to locals, a monument has been erected to this popular Hampton Wick resident.

In fact, Bushy Park has many attractions, among them the park itself: it is the second largest park in London. As well as a large team of groundskeepers that work year-round to maintain the park’s beauty, deer are found there, roaming free. In the centre of the park stands the Diana fountain, designed by Christopher Wren, who also designed Hampton Court Palace. Whilst the palace was being built, many people came to live in the town and in nearby Hampton and Hampton Hill. The church in Hampton became too small, and the locals of Hampton Wick took advantage of the situation and got their own church after much dispute. It became official when Hampton Wick formed their own board in 1863.
