Epsom Local Information

Epsom, to the south of Greater London, is located in the borough of Epsom and Ewell in Surrey. It is famously known for being the home of the Epsom Derby, a horse race on the Epsom Downs. Held every June, the derby is the second leg of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing in England. After the first running of the Epsom Oaks in 1779, the 12th Earl of Derby and Sir Charles Bunbury flipped a coin to see who would have a race named after them the next year. The Earl won, as did his horse that day (Bridget). The following year, at the first Epsom Derby, Sir Charles’ horse Diomed won, and so it all began!

At one stage, Epsom had five psychiatric hospitals located quite close to each other: Manor Hospital (built 1899), Saint Ebba’s Hosptial (1902), Horton Hospital (1903), Long Grove Hospital (1907, and exactly the same as Horton to save time), and West Park Hospital (started in 1912, completed in 1921). They were built on land at Epsom Downs, by the London County Council to ease the overcrowding of its other hospitals, and were called the ‘Epsom Cluster’. Horton, Manor and Long Grove Hospitals are now residential and West Park and Saint Ebba’s Hospitals having only limited services.
