Egham Local Information

Egham is a historic town, 19 miles west of Central London, in the county of Surrey. Historians can date its history back to between 900 – 700 BC through archaeological evidence of stone age and bronze age settlements. Egham was a busy coaching town in the 18th century but now heavy traffic can bypass the town.

Half a mile from Egham station is Runnymede Meadow, the site where King John signed the Magna Carta in 1215. The American Bar Association erected a memorial in the form of a domed classical temple on the site in 1957 to commemorate the event.

Close by, you’ll find a memorial to the men and women of the Allied Air Forces who died during World War II. From the top of the tower you can get magnificent views over the Thames to Windsor.

On the outskirts of Egham you can visit the ornate Royal Holloway College, part of the University of London which was modelled on the French Chateau de Chambord. Designed as a college for women, it was opened by Queen Victoria in 1886 and contains an excellent small art gallery.
