Claygate Local Information

Claygate is a large village in the English county of Surrey. As it is close to Kingston-upon-Thames, it now has some of the highest property prices in the United Kingdom. It is mainly a residential and commercial centre, with shops, restaurants and pubs.

Claygate took its name from the extensive clay pits that used to be in the village, clay pits that provided clay for a large area surrounding Claygate, including the Hampton Court Palace. As with many places, it remained largely rural until the advent of the railway in the 1800s, when development took off. The Holy Trinity Church was built in 1840, and is noted for having two spires.

The Green in Claygate is currently undergoing a major overhaul but the Parish Council in conjunction with the Claygate in Bloom team. The first part of the renovation has been completed with all the old plants being removed. New plants will be sourced and planted in the New Year.
