A marker denotes the spot, in Mile End where the first German V1
rocket fell on London near the railway bridge on the Great Eastern
Main Line.
Old Ford Local Information
Old Ford is an area in the Borough of Tower Hamlets and historically
considered part of Bow. Old Ford, as the name suggests, was the
ancient, most downstream, crossing point of the River Lee. This
follows the modern Oxford Street, Old Street, through Bethnal Green
to Old Ford.
It then crosses a causeway through the marshes, known as Wanstead
Slip. It then continued through Essex to Colchester. At this time,
the Lee was a wide, fast flowing river, and the tidal estuary stretched
as far as Hackney Wick.
