Beckenham is located within the London Borough of Bromley and is
situated about 8.4 miles south east of Charing Cross. In the Domesday
Book 1086 it is referred to as Bacheham. The River Beck was named
so after Beckenham. In Middle English the word Beck also means a
stream.
Located in Beckenham is St George’s Church which is within
the Diocese of Rochester. For some 900 years a church has stood
on this site. The current church is Victorian. St George’s
is situated on the corner of the High Street and Bromley road and
next to the green known as St George’s Green. St George’s
church is one of the few that remains open throughout the day.
St George’s Church is known for its windows which were designed
by Thomas Freeth. During World War II a bomb exploded on the Green
and damaged the east end of the Church and damaged extensively the
glass works. Thomas Freeth was invited to design a small window
and this proved to be so successful that he went onto design the
rest of the windows. Thomas Freeth died in 1997 and has left designs
for several more windows as and when funds permit.
