Barnes History

The history of this town center is powerful…literally. Barnes Council used to be located in the Old Power Station, which until the mid 20th century made its own power for the entire borough. The “council depot” as it was known housed everything from the rail stop to the mortuary and was used during World War II as a bunker for air raid wardens. In fact, helmets were still hanging inside the station until the mid 1980’s.

Today the borough of Barnes is a thriving town in the southwest Greater London area, and is home to many small and mid-size businesses. You will not be in need of a choice of eateries since Barnes is known for it’s abundance of pubs and restaurants. The Barnes Fair is the town’s largest fundraiser, and takes place in July featuring a big parade, fair, events and booths.
