Norbury Local Information
Norbury is a suburb in the London Borough of Croydon, on the border
with the London Borough of Lambeth and the London Borough of Merton.
It shares the postcode London SW16 with nearby Streatham. Norbury
is about seven miles south of Charing Cross.
It is thought that Norbury’s name came from North Burgh,
because Norbury is on the northern boundary of the former Manor
of Croydon. Today Norbury is a lively place with many high street
shops and restaurants to visit. Norbury Hall, which is on Craignish
Avenue, is still standing and is a grade 2 listed building.
It was built for William Coles in 1802, the 5th mayor of Croydon
also lived in the house and he purchased the house in 1884. The
river Graveney forms part of the boundary between Norbury and Streatham,
before flowing in to the River Wandle, and then the River Thames.
Norbury railway station opened in 1878. It was rebuilt in 1902
and it connects Norbury with Croydon and London Victoria. Norbury
was the home to electric trams, which were introduced in 1901, which
connected the entire town and even reached Purley.
Unfortunately the trams used a different system and so they could
never join onto the same tracks as the London trams until 1925 when
they changed the tram system and joined it onto the London trams.
The trams were removed after World War II, but there are now plans
to extend the tram link from Croydon to go through Norbury and on
to Streatham.
