Hornsey Local Information
Hornsey is located in the London borough of Haringey. At the centre
of the old village of Hornsey, in the ancient graveyard in Hornsey
High Street, stands the tower of the original church. The tower
has its own society – the Friends of Hornsey Church Tower
– and the society is dedicated to preserving the tower so
future generations can enjoy it.
It is reported that there has been a church and graveyard on the
site since Saxon times and historical evidence puts a church there
as early as 1291. This was built on and repaired in the mid-1300s,
demolished in 1831 (but not the tower) and replaced with another
church that was itself demolished in 1927. Where Saint Mary’s
Infants’ School now stands was a church, built in 1889, but
demolished in 1969.
It is in the Hornsey churchyard that Samuel Rogers (friend to Byron
and Dickens) is buried. Peter Sellers and Bob Hoskins grew up in
Hornsey and Ho Chi Minh resided here for a time. See if you can
find their old houses as you drive around in your car hire.
The Old Schoolhouse was built in 1848, and is the oldest building
in the N8 postcode, after Hornsey Old Church. It is now home to
the Hornsey Historical Society.
Have a car hire dropped off to your house or work, so you can explore
all Hornsey has to offer, and let us collect it when you’re
done! There really is no easier way.
