Highgate Local Information
Highgate is a suburb of London and is divided between three boroughs
– Camden (south and west), Islington (south and east) and
Haringey (north). It is one of the more affluent suburbs in London
and The Highgate Society is charged with protecting its character.
The legendary Dick Turpin has been associated with Highgate and
other famous people to be linked with Highgate include T.S. Eliot
and Samuel Coleridge – the latter living in Highgate to recover
from his opium addiction. He stayed on living out his life in Highgate.
Drive your car hire past the red brick buildings of the Highgate
School and view the Victorian architecture. Have a wander through
the adjoining Chapel of Saint Michael where Coleridge is buried.
The school itself has been on the same site since it was built with
the permission of Queen Elizabeth I in 1565.
During the 1600s, the 1700s and the 1800s, visitors to Highgate
were given the ‘Swearing on the Horns’ – an oath
that basically swore people to a life of merriment and drinking.
It was all a joke of course, but had the set-up of a proper society
with an oath and fees (usually beer). People who had been sworn
in then were awarded the title “Freeman of Highgate”.
Participating pubs carried horns over their doors. Drive around
in your car hire today, and see if any still exist!
