Woking Local Information
Woking is a civil parish as well as a large town in the London
borough of Woking. In the book ‘The Meaning of Liff’
by Douglas Adams, Woking is the word for those frustrating times
when you go to your kitchen, but forget why (haven’t we all
done that at some time?!). Woking was also where the martians from
H.G. Wells’ book ‘War of the Worlds’ landed and
Wells lived in Woking.
A sculpture of one of the martians in the Horsell Common, close
to the town centre, commemorates this. It also demonstrates the
destruction of Woking! Take a trip there in your car rental to take
a peep at it. Rick Parfitt, guitarist for Status Quo, was born in
Woking and Fernando Alonso, driver for McLaren, lives in Woking.
Woking serves as a community town for the London commuter belt,
which means that people live here and commute to work in London
from here. Car rentals are one way of getting from Woking to London
on your daily trip to work! Indeed, Woking is well serviced by the
motorways M25 and M3, as well as the A3, so there’s no getting
lost in your car rental.
Woking dates back to 673 AD, and began its life as a settlement
for a group of Wessex people. These people followed Wocca, and hence
the name.
Woking is made up of several smaller suburbs; however, Old Woking
(which is one such suburb) is often considered a separate village,
while two sub-towns of Woking, Knaphill and Sheerwater are sometimes
considered outer suburbs of Woking.
Horsell Village is a part of Woking, and it is here that the martians
landed in ‘War of the Worlds’ – opposite what
is now ‘The Sands’ pub on Chertsey Road. Horsell is
also home to Horsell Common, one of the last privately owned areas
of common land with public access left in England. Take a trip down
there in your car rental and spend some time walking in the tranquillity.
