Weybridge Local Information
Weybridge gets its name from the River Wey, as it is bordered to
the north by the Thames and the Wey. It is found in the Elmbridge
borough of Surrey – why not take a drive around the town in
your car rental and see the different areas of Weybridge. For example,
the town shopping centre, Monument Hill, Saint George’s Hill
and Oatlands Village. At the bottom of Monument Hill, is a monument
dedicated to the Duchess of York. It was built in 1820, from the
remains of a statue that had been in Saint Martin’s Lane,
London (the Seven Dials Monument) since 1773.A cricket green lies
at the top of Monument Hill, and next to this is a WWI memorial.
Weybridge appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Webrige and Webruge,
and its earliest history was as a river crossing. Henry VIII built
Oatlands Palace here in 1537, taking the stone for the palace from
the nearby Chertsey Abbey, which was taken apart during the dissolution
of the monasteries. He built it for Anne of Cleves, his fourth wife,
and later married Catherine Howard after the marriage to Anne was
annulled. The site is now home to Oatlands Park Hotel, and the palace
was demolished in 1650 (the stone being used to make the Wey Navigation
canal. Travel by car rental to the hotel and stop in for a pint.
In Weybridge Heath, many rare species of flora and fauna used to
be found, and world-renown entomologist Horace Donisthorpe once
travelled to the heath to study the rare ant colony there. The heath
was allowed to become overgrown, but recently Surrey Wildlife Trust
put in place a plan to renovate the heath to attempt to restore
it back to its former glory. It is easily accessible by car rental,
so pop down there and see how far it has come.
