A Bit of Tooting History

The name of Tooting alone brings a smile to most people, and has since its founding in 1767. The name has many assumed origins, but most confer that it came from an ancient Saxon tribe known as the Totingas, where Tota was the chief and “ingas” means people.

The Tooting Junction Railway opened in 1868, and it was then that a few rich gentleman decided to move to Tooting, and commute into London. These men also built the Tooting Golf Club, and were severely criticized for playing on Sundays because it was the Lord’s Day. In 1903, the areas first electric tram service began running from Tooting into Westminster, and the trolley is still enjoyed by many today.

Tooting survived World War II after the Germans bombed much of the town, but it fully recovered and today is a very different place.

Tooting has a very diverse and multicultural feel.
