Thornton Heath Local Information
Just a short drive from Charing Cross in your car rental and you’ll
find the London borough of Croydon. Within this borough is located
the district of Thornton Heath. Sandwiched between West Croydon
and South Norwood, Thornton Heath’s centre is the Thornton
Heath High Street, and until the mid-1800s, Thornton Heath was actually
at the location on the modern day A23 known as Thornton Heath Pond.
What was the heath stretched from the pond to Norbury, and the
land was the grazing land for the manor of Norbury. The path known
as Colliers Wood Lane was thought to have been used by charcoal
burners, taking water from the pond. Park your car rental and explore
the area reflecting on how much it has changed.
An area near the pond was known as Gallows Green, as a set of gallows
were used to both hang highwaymen (who were prevalent in the area)
and serve as a warning to would-be highwaymen. Dick Turpin, perhaps
the most famous highwayman of all time, used to live near Thornton
Heath. The gallows were a bit of a landmark in the area, as it was
by the side of a coach route from London to the south coast.
A coaching inn was established in the 1700s near the pond, called
Wheatsheaf, to provide refreshments for horse, driver and passenger
alike. Around 1799 the common was enclosed, and development began
along London Road, around the pond. The pond was soon done away
with, and in 1897 (to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee)
it was turned into a fountain. This is now the roundabout on the
A23. Drive past it in your car rental and picture the roundabout
as it would have been over 100 years ago.
