Local Information Sydenham
Set mostly in the London Borough of Lewisham, but also venturing
into the boroughs of Bromley and Southwark, Sydenham is most famous
for being the place where the Crystal Palace was relocated. Why
not jump into your car hire and explore the area.
Just seven miles from central London with excellent transport links
and local amenities, Sydenham is also home to plenty of businesses
Two hundred years ago, Sydenham was a quiet hamlet with thick wooded
areas and a few quaint cottages. In 1801, work started on the Deptford
to Croydon canal passing through Sydenham, unfortunately, the canal
failed to make much of an impact and it was eventually filled in
and converted into a railway in 1839. With the introduction of the
railway, the area started to steadily grow, and when Crystal Palace
was moved here in 1852, it became a trendy and stylish place for
those living in the city to visit. Unfortunately, Crystal Palace
burnt down in 1936.
The Beast of Sydenham has been spotted in the area a number of
times and on March 25, 2005, a man was attacked by the panther-like
animal. Colour television was also created in Sydenham and the first
pneumatic railway ran through the area. Back in the 1640’s,
people flocked to Sydenham as the springs of water in what is now
Wells Park were found to have medicinal elements.
