Selsdon Local Information
A short drive in your car rental from the centre of London in the
borough of Croydon is the suburb of Selsdon. The area was established
between the wars, in the years 1920 and 1930, and offers a great
display of Art Deco homes. Prior to this the area was known as Selsdon
Wood and was a popular hunting ground. In the 1920s the land was
broken up and developed.
Concerns were raised about the speed of the development and a committee
was set up to make sure 200 acres were set aside to be preserved
as a nature reserve and bird sanctuary. This was opened to the public
in 1936 and Selsdon Wood is now five meadows, surrounded by ancient
hedges and woodland. Take a drive in your car rental and explore
this beautiful area and see if you can’t spy a deer feeding
close by.
Selsdon is perhaps best known for the term ‘Selsdon Man’
or ‘Selsdon Group’. These are taken from the old Selsdon
park Hotel, where in the 1970s a group of people got together to
discuss the idea that economic freedom is a crucial prerequisite
for social and political freedom. What began as a brainstorming
session by Edward Heath, Prime Minister from 1970 to 1974 and leader
of the Conservative Party, and his shadow cabinet eventually became
a group in 1973, lead by Nicholas Ridley.
The term ‘Selsdon Man’ was coined by the Prime Minister
at the time, Harold Wilson, who criticised the meetings and their
aim. Wilson went on to lose the election to Heath. Heath, in the
fact of opposition from trade unions, abandoned his ideals and the
manifesto created in the discussions at the hotel. Take a tour of
Selsdon in your car rental and see the historic sites that changed
a nation.
