Reigate Local Information
Located in the London borough of Reigate and Banstead is the suburb
of Reigate, in the shire of Surrey. Reigate is situated in Holmsdown
Hollow at the foot of the North Downs, a stretch of chalk ridge
that extends from Surrey to Kent for about 120 miles. You can drive
to the Downs in your car rental and stroll along the many nature
walks that can be found there. It is also a historic market town,
with settlement dating back to Roman times. At the time of the writing
of the Domesday Book in 1086 it was owned by William the Conqueror
(William I).
The site of early Reigate was located where the current Church
Street now stands. William gave the land to the person who would
go on to become the Earl of Surrey in 1088, and it is believed that
his son, the 2nd Earl of Surrey, would build Reigate Castle. Around
1150 the family ordered a town be built below the castle –
and Reigate was born. There is an extensive cave system below the
castle, and legend has it that the Magna Carta was sorted out in
these caves.
Although the castle was demolished in 1648, the caves are still
there and are sometimes opened to the public. Park your car rental
and take a tour of the caves, maybe you’ll find some evidence
that the legend surrounding the Magna Carta is true!
The current Priory Park is where the old deer park of the family
was located, and as the gate to the park was near to the town it
is though that the name ‘Reigate’ stems from ‘Roe-deer
gate’.
Within a mile or two of Reigate are the sixth and seventh highest
points of Surrey in Colley Hill and Reigate Hill. Spike Milligan
used to live in Woodhatch in Meadow Way – take a drive in
your car rental and see if you can find his old home.
