Raynes Park Local Information
Raynes Park is located in the London borough of Merton, just a
short drive by car rental from Charing Cross and sandwiched between
Wimbledon and New Malden. Raynes Park is a typical commuter suburb
– relatively prosperous and lower middle class to middle class.
Further, as potential buyers have been forced to look outside London,
prices of property have increased. The area is desirable due to
its rail links, and the fact that Wimbledon has previously had even
more expensive house prices. On the other side of Raynes Park are
more expensive houses with golf courses and gated estates, so Raynes
Park is as close as you can get to London while still in an affordable
price bracket. Explore the boundaries of the suburb in your car
rental, and experience the best of London without breaking the bank.
Tubby Hayes was a jazz musician who was born and raised in Raynes
Park. Best known for his saxophone playing, Hayes learned the violin
from his father, a BBC studio violinist. When he was 10 years old,
Hayes began playing the piano, and then sax at eleven. By fifteen,
Hayes was playing professionally. When he eventually died of heart
disease brought on by a drug habit, Hayes left behind a collection
of recordings that are now much sought after by enthusiasts.
Earlier on, Raynes Park was part of Merton, and the area remained
largely rural until well into the 1800s. In 1838 the railway arrived,
and today it splits the suburb in two. In the 1870s, however, Cottenham
was north of the line and Raynes Park was to the south. The land
was owned by one Richard Garth, who also held the manor of the adjacent
parish of Morden, and planned a garden suburb much in the same manner
as Merton Park to the east. The previous owners of the property,
the Rayne family, gave rise to the name of the current suburb. Take
a drive around the area in your car rental and see the sites of
