Purley Oaks Local Information
Purley Oaks, like Purley, is located in the London borough of Croydon.
Actually, Purley Oaks is represented on the coat of arms for Croydon,
as is Purley Beeches – with a branch of each tree (the oak
bearing fruit) sprouting from a fountain and symbolises the River
Wandle. Purley Beeches is a 17 hectare, picturesque piece of wooded
down containing many beech trees, but is actually located in Sanderstead.
The Parish Council met in 1907 to talk about purchasing Purley Beeches
– the motion was passed and the land was bought.
From Purley Beeches you can walk along the path to the Wettern
Tree Garden, a garden laid out in 1919 by Frank Wettern, who was
able to look after the gardens after they were acquired by council.
The gardens contain a number of smaller and ornamental gardens,
including a delphinium border and rose trellis garden, so pop down
in your car rental and stroll around the grounds, taking in the
sites.
Purley Oaks lies about 13 miles from London’s centre –
not that far by car rental – and has its own rail station,
which lies close to Sanderstead and South Croydon stations. The
suburb is mainly residential, with 1920s and 1930s semi-detached
houses popular with young families and people travelling to work
in London’s commuter belt.
A short drive away by car rental are several attractions in other
suburbs, among them Morden Hall Park, George Inn and Ham House and
Gardens. Ham House dates back to the 1600s, and contains beautiful
artwork and furniture as well as collections of fabric. The gardens
are immaculately maintained and well worth a walk though. Why not
park your car rental and have a browse around this, and other, historic
National Trust Properties?
