Purley Local Information
Purley is located in the borough of Croydon, just under 12 miles
by car rental from Charing Cross, and with a population of about 72,000.
the name Purley is thought to derive from ‘pirlea’, which
in turn comes from ‘peartree lea’. Poor old Purley has
been shoved from pillar to post; in 1894 it became part of the Croydon
Rural District of Surrey. In 1915 it came together with Coulsdon to
form the Coulsdon and Purley Urban District. Then in 1963 this was
abolished and it became part of Greater London and part of the borough
of Crodon.
During World War II, nearby Kenley Aerodrome (together with Croydon
Airport and Biggin hill) was an important fighter station; nowadays
though it is home to a glider club. Over the years from 1917 to 1959,
many squadrons served here, and a memorial is located in a former
blast pen commemorating those who defended their country. Also, part
of the former station is dedicated as a tribute to the Commonwealth
and Allied fighter squadrons. Drive there in your car rental and pay
your respects, and discover what it might have been like for those
working during the war.
Purley’s north-eastern fringes extends into the North Downs,
a chalk ridge stretching from Surrey to Kent over 120 miles. And part
of Purley known as Webb Estate was found (in a 2002 survey) to have
attracted the highest-earning residents in the United Kingdom. One
road in the estate, designed by William Webb, has made a name for
itself alone. Promenade de Verdun is 600 yards long, and is lined
with Lombardy poplars. The trees are planted in soil taken from France
and England (the French soil was shipped over especially).
There is a plaque at one end, and at the other is a obelisk carved
from one single stone. The town was home to Von Ribbentrop (former
Nazi, tried and hung for war crimes at Nuremberg) , before war broke
and he was an ambassador – it is said that he ensured the town
was never bombed. Drive along the Promenade in your car rental and
admire its beauty, but also reflect on its significance.
