The Limehouse Basin, now the site of a residential complex, and its nearby canals, busy with tourist boats and fisher-folk, originally only saw transport of copper and coal.

The Grapes, a local riverfront pub, was a favorite haunt of Charles Dickens, who mentioned this in the book Our Mutual Friend.
