North Finchley Local Information
In 1462, North End was what is now North Finchley and Whetstone.
In 1627, a windmill and house was built – this became an inn
by 1722 and by 1754 the mill had ceased to operate and the inn had
taken over (the site is now a Police garage).
In 1756, North Finchley became a junction, when the end of Ballards
Lane was connected up to the High Road, then called the Great North
Road. In 1814 there was a beer house selling gunpowder and shot
near the junction.
Finchley Common has been linked to the Highwayman Dick Turpin (and
others) and a large oak that stood in Oak Lane opposite the Saint
Pancras and Islington Cemetery was known as Turpin’s Oak from
the 1830s until 1952. In 1816, when the common was enclosed, North
Finchley began to develop into more of an urban area and some say
the closing of the common signalled the end of the Highwaymen.
In the 1830s, a coaching company by the name Tally Ho based their
horses at the junction, and the name stuck. Drive through Tally
Ho in your car hire and picture what it would have been like many
years ago. During the 1930s, Ballard Lane ended where the Purple
Rain Bar is today, was replaced by a new road (the Kingsway). In
1937 the Gaumont Cinema was built on the space created by this new
road, although this was demolished in 1987 and in 2004 an arts depot
opened.
North Finchley is located in the borough of Barnet, with its centre
being tally Ho Corner – the junction of three main roads.
North Finchley is mainly residential with Victorian (cottages to
large double fronted) and Edwardian houses.
