Norbury Local Information
In the London borough of Croydon a short drive away in your car
rental from Charing Cross is the suburb of Norbury. The name is
thought to derive from ‘North Burgh’, as it was a town
on the northern border of the former manor of Croydon. Actually,
Norbury was a sub-manor of Croydon, held by the same family who
also owned Beddington.
Norbury Farm was the manor house – this was unfortunately
demolished in 1914. However, Norbury Hall (located on Craignish
Avenue) does still exist, albeit as a nursing home. This grade II
listed building was constructed in 1802.
Norbury borders on the boroughs of Merton and Lambeth and the River
Graveney forms part of its boundary between Streatham; the river
then flows into the Wandle and then on to the Thames.
The rail line came to Norbury in 1862, but a station was not built
until 1878. The horse-drawn tram didn’t stretch to town, and
the town had to wait until 1901 for electric trams to connect them
with other towns all the way to Purley. Then it was 1925 before
London and Croydon had the same kinds of tram tracks, so passengers
travelling further down the line did not have to change at Norbury.
Imagine how much simpler times would have been with a car rental
(or any kind of car, for that matter!).
Take your car rental around town and see if you can’t find
the former home of Kingsley Amis, novelist, poet, teacher and critic.
Father to novelist Martin Amis, Kingsley wrote some 20-plus books,
three books of poetry and many more works including television scripts
and short stories.
