New Southgate Local Information

In 1801, apart from a few farm buildings, the area that is now New Southgate was undeveloped and rural. In 1850, the area got a rail station and then a psychiatric hospital. 1858 saw the opening of a gas and coke works and by 1867 the town was well on its way.

Although New Southgate is close to Southgate, it is thought of as a separate suburb, and is located in the borough of Barnet. The area used to be known as Colney Hatch, but as there was a psychiatric hospital with the same name, the association forced the suburb to change to New Southgate.

Colney Hatch Lunatic Asylum opened in 1851, and was converted into luxury flats after being closed in 1993 – it is now known as Princess Park Manor. Drive past in your car hire and imagine life as a patient in the hospital – where two of the more famous residents were a Jack the Ripper suspect, and Dorothy Lawrence, who dressed as a male to fight on the front lines in WWII.
