New Addington History and Local Information
Set in the London Borough of Croydon with the largest postal district
in the country New Addington is mainly a large local authority estate
surrounded by countryside and golf courses. In 1935 the First National
Housing Trust bought 569 acres of a farm with plans to build a village
with 4,400 houses, shops, churches and other amenities. Before 1930,
the area of New Addington was just farmland and woodland with four
farms making up the area.
In 1939 with World War II, construction was halted with 1023 houses
and 23 shops completed. Due to the incompletion there were not enough
amenities to support the residents and the estate became isolated.
After the war more land was bought and a further 1,412 houses were
built, completed in the late 1960’s.
A strong community runs throughout the area of New Addington and
the Croydon Advertiser even publishes a separate newspaper the New
Addington edition for the area. Into the 1990’s the isolation
of New Addington was evident and there was a high amount of anti-social
behaviour along with poor education standards.
Recent regeneration has improved the problems, with most houses
being bought by tenants and the arrival of the Tramlink providing
connections in central London in just 20 minutes.
