Highbury Local Information
Highbury is a suburb located in the London Borough of Islington
and it is here that the home of Arsenal Football Club used to be
– Arsenal Stadium – but now it resides at nearby Ashburton
Grove. The old stadium will be demolished to make way for residential
units. Use your car hire to travel the areas and see where the new
and old stadiums are.
Highbury Manor was built in 1272, and it is believed that the site
on which it stands used to be a Roman garrison summer camp –
the tiles unearthed in 1781 when the new Highbury House was being
built, have since been lost. The original Highbury Manor was built
by the Lord Prior of the Priory of Saint John of Jerusalem (otherwise
known as the Knights Hospitallers in England), after being given
the land by the owner.
In 1381, Jack Straw led a gang of rioters to destroy the house,
as they were ‘offended by the wealth and haughtiness’
of the Priory. The Lord Prior at the time hid for a time in the
Tower of London but was found and beheaded – and Jack Straw
used the house as a makeshift headquarters. Consequently, the house
became known for the next 500 years as Jack Straw’s Castle,
and fell into disrepair. The new house was built in 1781 and in
1894 it became a school. In 1938 the house was demolished and a
block of flats put on the site.
