Godstone Local Information
Just a short drive east of Reigate in your car rental, conveniently
located at the crossing of the A22 and A25 (and junction 6 of the
M25, London’s 118 mile ring road, just north of the village),
is found the village of Godstone. In the centre of Godstone are
located two conservation areas – Church Town and Godstone
Green.
Church Town is overshadowed by Saint Nicholas’ church, dating
back to about 1845. Just next to the church are the Saint Mary’s
Almshouses, and together with the rest of Church Town you’ll
find many fine examples of traditional architecture (including the
more modern brick, which became fashionable in the 1700s, although
many parts of the town are still in the old timber – take
a drive around in your car rental and see the splendid buildings
in Church Town).
As traffic moved from hoofed to wheeled the streets in and around
Godstone Green became busier and busier. At about the same time
the many pubs and inns found around Godstone began to spring up.
So too did the many brick houses with the strong of homes in High
Street being built in the 1700s. The two centres of Godstone are
connected by both street and path – take a drive in your car
rental down Bullbegger’s Lane, a narrow road leading from
the south of the village to the church and then walk the footpath
from the White Hart Pub and associated barn to Church Road along
Bay Pond.
As you tour Godstone, reflect on the name and how it came to be;
although, it originally had a completely different name! The first
name of the village was Walkingstead, which was thought to derive
from Wolcen’s Place (with Wolcen being an Old English name).
Records from as early as 932 give evidence to this. But by 1248,
the name had changed to Godeston, meaning ‘Goda’s Village/Farm’.
Goda was the daughter of Edward the Confessor, but the Domesday
Book of 1086 show the parish belonging to Goda’s husband.
However, records of 1153 and 1173 state the name as being Cudeston
and Codstune respectively: ‘Code’s Farm’.
