Ealing Local Information

Ealing is a town in the London borough of Ealing, and is referred to as the “Queen of the Suburbs” (this nickname is as old as the 1850s, when improved travel meant more and more expanses of residential development). The name Ealing is thought to be from about 700, when it was spelt ‘Gillingas’, meaning ‘place of the people from Gilla’, the present spelling was settled upon in the 1800s.

Remains have been found to provide evidence for Ealing having been inhabited for at least 7000 years, although the earliest surviving census only goes back as far as 1599. The church of Saint Marys in located near to Saint Marys Road, where many early settlements were, with the church dating back to the early 1100s. Ealing began its life as farmlands, and as London developed it became market gardens, but is now mainly suburban development. During the WWII Polish pilots flew out of the nearby aerodrome and because of this there is now a healthy Polish community residing in Ealing and since Poland joined the EU its migrants have been welcomed here.
