Caterham Local Information

Caterham is located in the district of Tandridge, in the shire (or county) of Surrey. It lies in the North Downs a chalk ridge extending from Farnham to Kent for 120 miles. It is found on the A22 just a short drive in your car rental so make a day of it! The original settlement lay above the modern township on the top of the ridge – today this is called Caterham-on-the-Hill.

The current location of the town is due to the coming of the railway in 1856 and the Victorian age; the ever growing town required a larger church in Saint Mary’s (built in 1866) but the old church was kept and is just across the road from Saint Mary’s. The newer church, Saint John the Evangelist, is now larger than Saint Mary’s and was consecrated in 1882. Saint Mary’s church was the scene of the funeral of the first (and only) Police Officer to be killed in the line of duty in Surrey.
