Brockley Local Information

Brockley is in the London borough of Lewisham and its name is thought to be taken from the Old English, meaning ‘obroca’s wood’ or ‘grove’ – broca is Old English for badger. If you care to drive down Lewisham Way in your car hire, you’ll see the stately ‘Stone House’, built in 1773. It lays opposite Lewisham College, on land that remained farming properties until the 1800’s – some pear trees remain, reportedly from times long gone. Take a tour of the most notable building from that time, the (rebuilt) Brockley Jack, a public house rumoured to be popular amongst highway men of the era. Brockley Manor House was close to this, and this formed the original small hamlet of Brockley.

The ‘Hilly Fields Midsummer Fayre’ is held in Brockley each year, and is now 30 years old. It is run by the Brockley Society (BrocSoc) which was created to preserve the beautiful historic nature of the area – homes, gardens and buildings that the residents thought too valuable to lose. The Fayre is a traditional fair with arts and crafts stalls, demonstrations and home-made cakes.
