Wimbledon is a busy, cosmopolitan town with many features. First, of course, is home to the tennis. Wimbledon tennis first started the All England Croquet Club. The popularity of croquet was waning and the new sport of lawn tennis was taking off and the Croquet Club allocated one of its lawns for tennis. The Croquet Club decided to hold the first Lawn Tennis Chamionship in July 1877. In 1922 the popularity of this competition was drawing too many spectators and they had to resite their premises and rename the club to the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and moved to where it is still situated today near Wimbledon Park.

During the Wimbledon fortnight the town becomes alive with the atmosphere and the cheers from the courts can be heard all around Wimbledon Village. Wimbledon Village is full of many restaurants and bars with accommodation available in the Rose and Crown Public House which has picturesque conservatory to the rear of the pub. Other, more exclusive accommodation can be found at the Cannizaro Hotel which is part of the chain of hotels known as the Thistle Group. You can have single rooms, double rooms or if your pushing the boat out for a special occasion you can book yourself on of their suites with magnificent views over the Cannizaro grounds which incorporate a walled gardens, ponds and much more. You can take tea on the terrace of the Cannizaro Hotel if the weather is good.
