Local Information
Weybridge is a town in the Elmbridge district of Surrey in South
East England. It is bounded to the north by the River Thames at
the mouth of the River Wey, from which it gets its name. Weybridge
is made up of a number of distinct areas: town centre shopping area,
Monument Hill/Queens Road shopping area, St George's Hill, Brooklands
and Oatlands Village.
A pretty interesting thing about the early history of Weybridge
was that it was once simply a river crossing. In 1537 it became
the location of Oatlands Palace built by Henry VIII. When it was
demolished in 1650, bricks from its walls helped to line the then
new Wey Navigation canal. Part of the original site of the Palace
is now occupied by Oatlands Park Hotel.
At least four hotels are available in Weybridge, and lots and lots
of attractions. Some attractions to take your car hire to include
Brooklands Museum which opened in 1991 on 30 acres of the original
1907 motor-racing circuit; Chertsey Museum, which is housed in the
Cedars, a Grade II listed Regency town house with an attractive
garden; Kingston Museum which was built in 1904 with contributions
from Andrew Carnegie, the Scottish American benefactor; over four
parks; and several race courses.
One interesting tidbit about all you aspiring entomologists out
there, the entomologist, Horace Donisthorpe, visited Weybridge to
investigate the ant colony. Horace St. John Kelly Donisthorpe was
an eccentric British myrmecologist (one who studies ants) and coleopterist
(one who studies beetles), memorable in part for his enthusiastic
championing of the renaming of the genus Lasius after him as Donisthorpea,
and for his many claims of discovering new species of beetles and
ants. Visiting this site should be yet another stop you make in
your car hire during your visit to Weybridge.
