The area of Wallington is based in the London Borough of Sutton
and is situated approximately ten miles south west of Charing Cross.
The name Wallington derives from the Anglo Saxon Waletone and means
village of the Britons and is listed as a royal estate in the Domesday
Book 1086.
The original village was situated to the North of the current town
centre around the River Wandle and Wallington Bridge. The original
Carshalton railway station opened in 1847 in fields to the South
of Wallington. The then owner of Carshalton Park did not want it
to be located near to Carshalton village. The construction of the
railway station spurred house building within the area. In the 1860s
Nathaniel Bridges built a housing estate of gothic revival villas
and the architect was E L Brock. There also was a new church built
called Holy Trinity. This development spread southwards towards
Woodcote and at the time of the First World War a part of Woodcote
Road south of the station became the new high street.
Created in 1915 was the Beddington and Wallington Urban District
Council and was followed by the building of the town hall and the
architect was Robert Atkinson. The public library was built in the
1930s.
