Teddington is a town which in the London Borough of Richmond. It
has a postcode of TW11. It sits on the Middlesex bank of the river
Thames. On this section of the River Thames lies Teddington Lock.
Its length is the largest amongst the other locks on the river.
During the Saxon and Norman period Teddington was known as Todyngton
and Tutington. The name itself actually comes from an old English
tribal leader. The area that Teddington sits on, has evidence to
link inhabitants back to the Roman occupation. The first proper
settlers where no doubt the Saxons. Around the fourteenth century
there was probably around 200 people living in Teddington. The Abbot
Of Westminster was the main landowner who rented land to tenants
in exchange for working the land.
During the reign of Henry VIII some of the land in Teddington was
taken by the King to create extra hunting grounds. This area formed
Bushy Park.
By 1800 the number of people living in Teddington has increased
to around 700. The main reason for this was the Hampton Court Palace
which brought a lot of employment.. In 1811 the Teddington Lock
was built which created a link between Teddington and Ham. A suspension
bridge was also built in 1889. You like to drive over this bridge
in your car hire and admire the scenery. Once the railway line arrived
the towns inhabitants shot up rapidly to 14,037 by 1901. To provide
for all these extra people many more roads and homes were constructed.
The roads of the town today are interconnected very closely with
lots of Victorian and Edwardion style houses. Look out of your car
hire window at some of these beautiful period houses.
