Car
Hire Surbiton - London
Welcome to car hire at The Car Hire Co in Kingston.
Ideally situated for customers in Surbiton. Great choice and value
await.
Surbiton is a very suburban commuter town, which sits in the Royal
Borough of Kingston Upon Thames. Buildings are a variety of 1930’s
Art Deco, impressive 19th century town houses and 20th century semi-detached
houses.
Records exist to prove that Surbiton has been in existence from
around 1179. In those days its old English name was Subeton(e),
translating as southern farmstead. Before 1838, the town was just
a farm but in that year the Surbiton railway station opened which
linked the South Coast. Today London can be reached from Surbiton
in 18 minutes, which is why the town is sought after by commuters
and its property prices reflect this.
Surbiton is probably most well known for the hit 1970’s sitcom
‘The Good Life’ which starred Richard Briers, Felicity
Kendal, Paul Eddington and Penelope Keith. The programme was centred
around two middle class couples who were neighbours living in Surbiton.
One couple were Tom and Barbara Good who decide to change their
lives and turn their Surbiton house into an eco friendly and self
sufficient farm/allotment. The other couple were Margo and Jerry
Leadbetter, middle class snobs with Margo the wife completely dominating
her husband. The programme was produced by John Howard Davies. He
was influenced by the playwright Alan Ayckbourn when writing the
scripts.
‘Stella Street’, another probably not as well known
comedy series also featured Surbiton. In the series the town was
sometimes nicknamed “Suburbiton”. The programme arrived
on BBC2 at the end of the 1990’s. It was a low budget production
using hand held cameras. The programme was centred around celebrity
characterisations which lived side by side one another in Stella
Street. Comic actors Cornwell and Sessions featured in the programme
and did a great job of impersonating the celebrity characters.
