Sanderstead was formerly a parish of Surrey, but since 1965 has been part of the
London Borough of Croydon.

Sanderstead is built on high ground at the edge of the built up area of Greater London. The Sanderstead train station is lower down the hill and has trains to East Croydon and London, and to East Grinstead and Uckfield.

With lots of shops and new restaurants Sanderstead is a wonderful place to visit, if you rent a car from The Car Hire Co you could visit Sanderstead, which is rich in Anglo Saxon history. An Anglo Saxon reference to Sanderstead can be found in the will of Alfred, which is dated 871.

There is also evidence of prehistoric human activity in Sanderstead. North of Sanderstead at Croham Hurst on a hill are several circular barrows, they are believed to be from a Bronze Age settlement. This area is now part of a public open space and a brass monument marks the site.

One of the more curious things about Sanderstead is that it doesn’t have a pub, unlike surrounding areas, such as Warlingham, which has about six different pubs to choose from. The reason Sanderstead doesn’t have a pub is because some time ago the Atwood family, Lords of the Manor, and the church were both against drinking.

Quite a few famous people live or have lived in Sanderstead such as John Atwood, who was the Assistant Governor of the Plymouth Colony in 1638.
