The value of Peckham was a mere 30 shillings when owned by King Henry I, who eventually gave it to his son Robert, Earl of Gloucester. In the sixteenth century, Peckham was a sought after home for many of the country’s wealthy families and large estates were built. Later, in the nineteenth century, the town was still a quiet, small village surrounded by beautiful fields and the former wealth was countered by growing poverty.

To preserve greenery, Peckham Rye was purchased in 1868, and it was here that William Blake had his famous vision of a cloud of angels. Thousands flocked to the area to experience the vision and the area was sold and now known as Peckham Rye Park.

Today, Peckham is home to many new families and houses are once again being built at a steady pace. The healthcare industry has become a major source of employment and economic development.
