The Museum of the Royal Artillery. The Royal Arsenal, founded in
1820, moved to its current location in 2001, was one of England’s
most important, and secret, ammunitions manufacturing centers. Included
in the current Arsenal displays are guns, uniforms, drawings, diaries,
and medals representing 700 years of military history.
Shortly after the Royal Arsenal was built, the Royal Victoria Dock
was officially opened by Prince Albert in 1855. The dock was the
first in the area built to service steam ships with direct rail
links. The nearby Royal Albert Dock opened in 1880 and was equipped
with hydraulic cranes and steam winches, state-of-the-art equipment
for the time.
