Morden is part of the London Borough of Merton and is about ten
miles from central London. Merton Park is to the north, Mitcham
to the east and Sutton to the south with Worcester Park to the west.
The word Morden is known to be Saxon and gets is name from “Mawr”
(high) and Don (a hill). Although Morden dates back to prehistoric
times the first significant development was the building of a Roman
road from Chichester to London and this was known as Stane Street.
This is now know as the A24, London Road up to Stonecot Hill crossing
through the pitch on put in Morden Park and St Lawrence’s
Church. Some artefacts have been recovered but these were only small
pieces comprising mainly of coins and pottery.
Ethelstan the Etheling who was Ethelred the Unready’s son
left the land of Morden to the Christ and St Peter Abbey in 1015
which then became St Lawrence’s Church the first Saxon church.
In the 11th Century Morden is name in the Domesday Book when it
belonged to Westminster Abbey and only had 14 people living in the
area at the time.
Morden remained a rural parish until the 19th Century. The population
in 1801 for Morden was 512 and 100 years later the population was
only 960.
Close to St Lawrence’s Church was the George Inn which was
a 17th Century coaching inn which is still here today and is a Harvester
restaurant.
