Forest Hill is located within the Borough of Lewisham in South East London. It started to emerge as a residential area with the opening of the Croydon Canal in 1809. The canal was not a success and in 1839 it was converted into the railway line which to this day continues to link Forest Hill to Central London.

Forest Hill has a pub named The Dartmouth Arms which first came into existence along the banks of the canal. Actor Leslie Howard and musician Francis Rossi were both born in Forest Hill and Linda Lovegrove, the Commonwealth swimming Gold Medalist & World Record holder from 1962-67 did her training at the Forest Hill pool.
