Local History And Information About Erith

Erith is situated in the Borough of Bexley in South East London. Originally a small village occupied by warriors and farmers, Erith became a riverside port during the reign of Henry VIII who decided to open a naval dockyard in the town.

Erith was extremely important in the production of ammunition and guns during the First World War due to the large Vickers works in Fraser Road. The town was heavily bombarded during the Second World War. You can visit the Erith Museum in Erith Library to get more of a feel for the history of the town.

By the early 1960’s, plans had been put forward to develop Erith into the modern business and shopping area that it is today. By 1980 the only remnants of the old town were the Queens Church, The Crosskeys pub and Christchurch.

Erith also boasts the largest pier in London and is a popular leisure spot for anglers.
