Try Eltham, a little suburb found on an ancient path to Kent.

A track dated to 500BC has been found to be the original ‘pilgrim’s way’: a route pilgrims took from Hampshire to Canterbury in Kent (where the English channel ports were found). Eltham is found along this route, and is home to the Eltham Palace, which goes back to 1305 and King Edward II.

Oddly, Eltham College is not actually in Eltham anymore, so don’t be too confused with the naming. It’s actually in Mottingham, accessible by car hire. The Well Hall Pleasaunce is also found in Eltham, and hosts formal gardens, ponds and woodlands dating back to the 1200s. It contains a bridge that is 500 years old, and an Italian garden from the 1930s.
